As David reflected over his life, he came to the conclusion that his life and relationship with God paralleled the relationship he had with his sheep when he was a shepherd. The 23rd Psalm contains several promises that God makes as the shepherd of his flock. Bro. Hughes focuses on verse three tonight and explores the promise of restoration of the soul. There are times and circumstances when people can become frustrated or depressed in life. None are immune to these down days. We all feel depressed no matter how blessed our life may be overall. Verse 3 contains the promise that God will restore our soul during these times. In the world of sheep herding, there is a parallel to this concept. If a sheep rolls over onto their back, they are not capable of righting themselves, and if they are left too long, they will die. The role of the shepherd is to roll the sheep back over on their feet to save them. God makes this promise to us. Our shepherd will not leave us when we fall, and will do everything necessary to put us back on our feet. There are some parallels between sheep becoming cast and people getting down. Sheep become cast when they find a soft spot in which to lay. Bro. Hughes says there is a danger in comfort. Some people get into a comfortable place, and fall. Sheep can become cast for seasonal issues; If they are pregnant or carrying more weight. People too can fall when the weight of life becomes too great. Sheep can become cast when they have too much wool. The extra wool attracts extra things that weigh them down, or cause their balance to be off. People too can have too much attached to their lives. These extra things can cause us to fall. A sheep may become cast if they eat too much and become fat. Often the people who complain the most, are the ones that have been blessed the most. They never do anything with the blessings that God brings into their life, and it turns into spiritual fat rather than spiritual muscle. God may put us onto a spiritual diet and exercise program to build the necessary muscle to put us back on our feet. God is working to get us back on our feet.
