Jesus has a great answer for us! He once told a parable about two men, both going into the temple to pray. One man was trusting in himself for righteousness, the other knew his only hope for righteousness would be found in God's mercy. One commended himself to God, the other could not even look up to the sky. One thanked God that he was not like other people (sinners), while the other confessed his sin, beat his chest and pleaded for mercy. One treated others with contempt, while the other's eyes and heart were transformed toward other sinners, like him. One walked away from the temple that day with a lot of religious boxes checked off, doomed for hell. The other "went to his house justified."
