In the first chapter of John's gospel, he referred to Jesus as "The Word." Through the person and teaching of Jesus we understand the heart and mind of God the Father. Unlike animals, we are endowed with the ability to form thoughts and to communicate them to one another and to God. This is a gift from God that enables us to know Him through prayer, both spoken and silent, as we utter the deep, innermost yearnings of our soul to a Father who listens and cares. We know each other, and are known, by our words. They shape us; they distinguish us. When we open our mouths, we reveal who we are. Some of us are better with words than others. Some of us use words as weapons to manipulate and overpower others. Some of us use words to inspire and change the world for the better. Our ability to use words equips us for particular professions - lawyers, professors, authors and preachers. Mothers soothe and sculpt their children by their words. Lovers use words to express heartfelt commitment and tender emotions. Generals use words that send soldiers into battle, ready to lay down their lives for their countries. Words are powerful tools. We can choose to intentionally develop our word gift or to neglect it, to use it for good or for evil. At stake are our witness and our legacy. As you work through this lesson, pray that God will give you insight into the way you use words. In addition, ask Him to empower you to become a skilled wordsmith, using words that build others in their faith and bring Him glory.
