There has been a lot in the press recently about Christian unity. A senior Methodist said this week that the Methodist church is “ready to go out of existence ... for the sake of mission.” The Archbishop of Canterbury this week urged his church not to tear itself apart in battles over homosexuality and women bishops. The church at Corinth to which Paul wrote appears to have been seriously troubled by division. Paul"s advice to them is not to compromise on issues of morality, but to care for each other. He invites them to understand what it means to be the body of Christ, so that when one part hurts, the rest hurts. Joshua 22 contains an insight into what this means in practice. The question we are left with is this: that if each one of us is a part of the body of Christ, will we play our part?
