"I kept looking until thrones were set up, and the Ancient of Days took His seat; His vesture was like white snow, and the hair of His head like pure wool. His throne was ablaze with flames, its wheels were a burning fire. A river of fire was flowing and coming out from before Him; thousands upon thousands were attending Him and myriads upon myriads were standing before Him; the court sat, and the books were opened" (Daniel 7:9f.). Why does man consistently perceive the God of Scripture to resemble the gods of this world or even to resemble man himself? Is it possible that man wants to become his own god? Though man is made in God's image, is man attempting to re-image God so that God is made in man's image? How are you preparing to come before the holiness of all holinesses when the supreme tribunal shall be seated and the book of life is opened? The western world is strongly polytheistic and as it becomes more pluralistically tolerant it shall move toward the worship of an increasing number of gods. In the Seventeenth Century, a gathering of godly Christians at Westminster Abbey in London plumbed the Scriptures to arrive at the following biblical definition of the God Christians worship: "There is but one only living and true God, who is infinite in being and perfection, a most pure spirit, invisible, without body, parts, or passions, immutable, immense, eternal, incomprehensible, almighty, most wise, most holy, most free, most absolute, working all things according to the counsel of his own immutable and most righteous will, for his own glory; most loving, gracious, merciful, long-suffering, abundant in goodness and truth, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin; the rewarder of them that diligently seek him; and withal most just and terrible in his judgments; hating all sin, and who will by no means clear the guilty." (The Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 2, Section II.) The Bible leaves no doubt that nothing in this world - particularly man himself - should be considered with the same awe and breathlessness that you consider God. Every leaf of Scripture announces God's uniqueness and He is not changing. He has forfeited none of His personality, power, provisions or purpose to you or to anyone. God has not been created for your pleasure or glory, but you have been created for His (Isa. 43:7). If you were to accumulate all of the most favorable conditions, situations, personalities, blessings, benefits and treasures throughout all of time, both past and future, their cumulative nature could not compare to a moment in the presence of the Lord God. Outside the courts of the Lord is exile regardless of appearances or one's feelings to the contrary. Standing at the mere threshold of the Lord's house out-values all other existences, for there alone will you experience awakening, enlightening, revival and adoration. Dwelling with God is preferable to all other habitations. "To whom would you liken Me, and make Me equal and compare Me, that we should be alike? For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me" (Isa. 46:5, 9).
