" In the Meantime"

  • Dr. Jim Lucas
  • 21 listens

Right after Paul address the Thessalonians understanding of the Christian dead, he moves on to talk about the time and date of the Day of the Lord. The rapture or the catching away of living believers, the resurrection of the Christian dead are the beginnings of what Scripture refers to as The Day of the Lord. This “day” is more than a 24 hour period. It refers to the climax of history, the time when the Lord makes good on his promises to his people, the time when the enemies of God and his people are judged and the new world order is created. We see its unfolding in the book of Revelation chapters 6 to 19 culminating in the creation of the new heaven and the new earth. In our text Paul has some encouraging words for us as we wait for the Day of the Lord. In the first 3 verses he points out that we are not like those who do not know the Lord. Instead, in verses 4 to 11, we find that we have lots of reason for hope and lots of things to do while we wait expectantly for the Lord’s return. As children of the day we do not need to worry about God’s wrath. Instead we are to live alert and self-controlled lives while remembering our destiny and remembering our calling to help one another.
