Perhaps you've done it for years. Or at least you have seen it done. It's called “going through the motions.” It's a phrase that describes someone who is doing something out of shear routine. No heart behind the motion; just doing what is expected. It's a hollow existence; a passionless one with perhaps no recollection of how we got here. Children grow up knowing which buttons to push and which ones not to push. Students know just what to do to shim by and fly under the radar. Marriages hang on by a thread as long as the spouses play by the rules and walk numbly through their marital and parental responsibilities. At work, the boss looks over our shoulders. We hate our job, but until we can do better…we go through the motions. Our relationship with God can diminish to that same cliche. It can be just motions.
