Legacy of the Saints

  • Betsy Ouellette
  • 43 listens

Pastor Betsy Ouellette preached on the "Legacy of the Saints" using the lectionary text Luke 19:1-10. This is the story of Jesus and Zaccheus the tax collector. Zaccheus was despised in the community for his dishonest tax collecting procedures, but when he heard Jesus was passing through Jericho he wanted to see him. Being very short he had to climb up a sycamore tree to see. He was greatly surprised when Jesus walked through the crowd to the foot of the tree, looked up and told Zaccheus he would dine with him that evening. Betsy said that Zaccheus "climbed the tree, a sinner but when he came down he received salvation." This conversion experience moved Zaccheus to not only return all the illegal tax money he had collected to the people, but returned four times the amount he had collected. She pointed out how this changed the legacy for Zaccheus' family. Instead of being despised outcasts in the community they now were revered. Betsy said when she visited Jericho the bus stopped at the sycamore tree where Jesus met Zaccheus. So important was this event that the story lives on in modern Jericho and the world today. Jesus continues to change lives and legacies.
