Role Reversal

  • Erick Ashley
  • 35 listens

Ever been in a place where you felt uncomfortable? Assistant Pastor Erick Ashley said that he had experienced that before. One recent time was when a member of Good Samaritan Church offered to let their family stay in his mountain home while on vacation. Erick pictured a log cabin when he envisioned their vacation destination. The picture of the house he showed on the video screen was far from a simple cabin. It was where Erick's family of six headed for a summer vacation. Erick said he felt a little uncomfortable as he nervously watched every move the kids made. He was determined to leave the vacation house in great shape. Erick said it was like the Beverly Hillbillies moving into town when they arrived at the beautiful home in an upscale neighborhood. They ended up having an enjoyable vacation. The vacation story set up Pastor Ashley's sermon on the lectionary scripture of Luke 18: 9-14 in which Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. Both men were praying in the temple. While the Pharisee felt comfortable in telling God just how good he was and how unlike those sinners surrounding him. The tax collector felt very uncomfortable and prayed for God's forgiveness for his sins. Jesus said the tax collector, rather than Pharisee ,was justified before God. The roles were reversed as Jesus declared "The proud will be humbled, but the humble will be honored." Erick said that Jesus wants to do a role reversal in our lives when we feel empty, uncomfortable and are humble enough to seek him like the tax collector did.
