On this Veteran's Day holiday Good Samaritan UMC recognized the veterans in the congregation in a special service entitled "Restoration." As the worshippers viewed a picture of Coventry Cathedral on the screen, Pastor Betsy Ouellette related the story of this historic church that was bombed by the German Luftwaffe on the night of November 14, 1940. The very next morning the people of the church decided to restore the cathedral as an act of faith and hope. Today the site of the old Cathedral is a prayer garden and a new cathedral has been built next to it. Using Haggai 1:5b-2:9 as the text, Pastor Betsy said that "restoration requires an outside symbol or sign." One of the signs that was discovered as the people of Coventry began to rebuild the Cathedral was that two fallen timbers had landed in the shape of a cross. The cross was a symbol and a starting point for the restoration of the cathedral. In Haggai, Betsy said that "the Lord of Heaven's Armies" reminded the people of Israel of the promise made to them when He brought them out of Egypt. This promise was a sign that He would be with them as they began to restore what was lost by rebuilding God's temple. Likewise this Veteran's Day holiday is a sign that reminds us of what our veteran's have done to preserve the peace we enjoy. Betsy said that the biggest challenge to restoration is lethargy. It is easier for people to give into the devastation than to do something about it. The people of Coventry did not give in to the desolation and today they have a historic reminder for all the world that faith and hope will be rewarded by God.
