In these verses, David eloquently describes what it is like to be delivered by the Savior. I am actually glad that we do not know exactly what David's "horrible pit" was. In this way, it can actually represent any pit into which a person may find himself. The horrible pits of sin, suffering, sorrow or storm are no match for our wonderful Lord!
