Jesus has directed us away from the wide gate, away from following other people, away from relying upon ourselves -- or others. We are not to rely upon any form of human morality, nor concern ourselves with what other people are doing or thinking. We are not to emulate other people -- except that we are to emulate Paul and those who emulate him, which simply means to emulate Christ. We are not to be caught up in wide-gate concerns. But rather our attention is to be on the narrow gate, upon Christ Himself. We are to seek first the kingdom of God, knowing that the vast majority of people in this world are not seeking the kingdom of God. And because of that, we cannot rely upon them as examples or paradigms of morality or behavior. In fact, we must disregard them. For the most part contemporary Christianity does not represent or convey the central values and practices found in Scripture or in the Sermon on the Mount, but is compromised in the same ways that the ancient Judaism was compromised. The ancient Israelites proclaimed that Yahweh was their God, but also swore to Molech, which means that they were entangled in various covenants and agreements, contrary to the dictates of Yahweh. Similarly, too many contemporary people claim to be Christians, but are dominated by the values of their politics, Democratic or Republican. Many people today are more Republican than Christian, or more Democratic than Christian. People put politics over Christ, rather than putting Christ first. This is a huge issue and is fraught with difficulties.
