Did God send David to the valley of Elah to kill Goliath? I am amazed at how many people would answer that question "yes." Yet the truth is that it was not God who sent David there, but David's father, Jesse. And He did NOT send him there to kill Goliath. Jesse sent David to take parched corn and bread to his brothers, cheese to his brothers' captain, and to return home with a good report of his brothers' condition. Killing Goliath was something David did on the side, an act of his own choosing. David responded to the threat of Goliath as he would have the threat of a lion or bear upon his sheep.
